Oval Callout:

A potted History of the Gite and main house:

Around 1820  the property comprised just the Gite, a couple of  cattle sheds and one or two of the adjoining fields.  The Main House was added in 1886.

The previous owners were peasant farmers and lived  off the land, growing most of their own food and rearing a small number of cattle. The old cattle sheds and barn are still standing opposite the Gite

Originally the family lived in the two rooms that comprised the Gite until moving into the main house when this was added later.  As the family grew the Gite was occupied again until the late 70’s after which it fell into disrepair and ruin (as you will see on the photo page !).

When we purchased the property in 2004, the only water available came from a well hidden deep underneath the drive . The house had electricity, but this comprised  little more than a ceiling light on the ground floor and a single socket in the lounge and kitchen.

About 10 years ago a modern WC was installed along with drainage to the main sewer. Remarkably, this had been installed on the mud floor of a former cattle shed next to what was the old kitchen door.

Now the mud floor has gone, and  there is  a new roof supported by exposed wooden beams.  The well is still there, but we only use this for the garden — clean, drinkable mains water is now supplied and of course the property has been completely renovated to a modern standard.
